JOHN (JOHNNY) GILBERT

Shot by police on 13th May 1865, he had become known as Australia’s worst criminal at the time of his death. Responsible for more than 630 hold-ups he was associated with the infamous Frank Gardiner and Ben Hall and was involved in the gold coach robbery at Eugowra. He initially lived in Melbourne but was lured to NSW by the gold rush. He became known as ‘Happy Jack’ due to his happy disposition and was an excellent horsemen. Gilbert was also responsible for the first known bank hold up in Australia in July 1863 with companion John O’Meally. He was eventually labelled an outlaw on 10th May 1865 under the Felons Apprehension Act and a 1000 pound reward placed on his head. It is interesting to note that he is the only Australian bushranger never to serve time in prison.
