His gang of 8, which included Ben Hall and Johnny Gilbert, held up the gold escort coach renowned for carrying large quantities of gold and cash from the Lachlan Goldfields in Forbes to Orange. Taking place on 15th June 1862, Gardiner’s gang hijacked bullock wagons and blocked the road then lay in wait behind large granite boulders for the coach to slow as it negotiated the obstacles.  The gang fired on the coach sending four of the men running for safety and wounding two. They then ransacked the coach and made off with 2,719 ounces of gold and £3,700 of cash, a total of around £14,000 which is worth more than $5 million in today’s value.
